'Rhodesia' was a name much more nice than 'Zambia' and 'Zimbabwe'. Some African countries after their independence have chosen horrible names. I enjoyed when Zaire became again 'Congo'.
Kraninland you say is only a part of Slovenia, not all. We call that Kranjska. With such a logic imagine all Germany called 'Bavaria' or all France called 'Lorraine'. My comment was only about the sound of the previous name, which represented all a country and not a mere part.
Please, do not quarrel, Dear Guests :-) Just to be precise, take present that the name "Rhodesia" derives from Cecil Rhodes, an European explorer, while "Zimbabwe" had been a more ancient kingdom. Its name derives from Shona language and means "sacred houses" or "houses of stone". "Zambia" derives from the river Zambezi. Some people say it means "The River of God", other people say it derives from an ancient population called "San".
Interesting comments, I have to agree with Suzana that I prefer Rhodesia as a name. This could well be though because I lived there, and life at that time was perfect in a beautiful country. I connect Zimbabwe with difficult times and much bloodshed. Diane
This speech shows us that some people unfortunately still thinks with a eurocentrist vision. What about the right of these countries to give themselves the name they considere most appropriate for them. Rhodesia remembers the British domination and some people don't remember that actual Zimbabwe was Rhodesia until 1980 in an apartheid system of government.
Personally I would prefer an empire like Austria-Hungary but I'm not anybody to say Slovenes, Croatians, Czechs, Slovakians, Hungarians or other peoples to be under the Austro-Hungarian rule and receive German or Hungarian names, not respecting neither their culture nor their territory.
Good to see my photo here. Thanks for using it on your blog. Buono giorno Diane

With such a logic, imagine your "Slovenia" with the historical name "Krainland" ore something like that...
