Secondo gli Accordi di Ginevra del 1954 il Parallelo 17° latitudine nord (in Vietnamita: "Vĩ tuyến 17") doveva essere la linea di demarcazione tra le due repubbliche del Vietnam. Ma per la precisione il confine correva appunto lungo il fiume Ben Hai (in Vietnamita: "Sông Bến Hải"), che si trova un po' più a sud del diciassettesimo parallelo. Yes, it was. This bridge on the river Ben Hai had been the only checkpoint on the road between North-Vietnam and South-Vietnam. You can recognize it on the map. The original bridge was damaged in 1967 with US bombs, but the government of Hanoi built it again, afterwards.
They even made another stronger bridge, just close to the first one (look al the left of 2010's photo or click here for a satellite view through Google Maps). The ancient bridge keeps a tourist interest, while the modern one is used by the ordinary traffic of vehicles.
