When there was the Emperor (from 1870 until 1918) the colours of German flag had inherited the colours of Prussia (Black+White) and the colours of Hansa (White+Red, like the colours of Denmark, the city of Hamburg, Poland and Latvia). With the Republic of Weimar it was added the Golden Yellow, to remember either the ancient Holy Roman Empire or Saxony. Note that in the football uniform of national team Germany is still coloured with Black+White: somehow, the colours of war and of German imperialism...
@Suzana - Colours of national teams of football still show - sometimes - something different from the flag also in other places. For example Italy wears "Savoy-azure" because of the previous family of the kings (1861-1946) and the Netherlands wear "Orange" because of their Orange-Nassau kings/queens.
Just to complete the whole speech about flags and this view, I also wanted to remember that the flag of Russia shows the colours of "panslavism". Exactly the same colours, are present also in the flags of Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia.
