So they demolished several housing blocks to create the "Via della Conciliazione", I did not know that. When you walked the small streets and then finally there is the view of the Vatican, that must have been impressive.
Together with the independence (previously lost in the year 1870), in the year 1929 the Pope obtained by Benito Mussolini also the purpose to demolish those houses, because - it seems - he wanted be able to look at the river from St. Peter's Square. The new street was made at once, but all works were stopped during the WWII (look at the second photo). However the current look was reached in the year 1950, just in time for the so called "Holy Year".
